One of the many types of form‐finding model that Frei Otto experimented with at the Institute of Lightweight Structures in Stuttgart University in the 1960s was the sue of soap films and bubbles. The author of this chapter was Otto's primary researcher on soap films and bubbles and provides a cogent summary of this visually‐striking strand of model‐making. Among the many challenges that had to be overcome was how to capture the complex geometry of three‐dimensional soap films in order to build a physical model that could be loaded and measured in the normal way.
