Italian engineers constructed many dams in the 1920s and first used model tests to study the potential for thin‐shell arch dams in 1926. The success of these model tests led to Arturo Danusso founding a testing station devoted to the use of reduced‐scale models in engineering design – the Laboratorio Prove Modelli e Costruzioni, in Milan. Not only did Danusso test many models of dams, he also conducted experiments on models of several structures designed by Pier Luigi Nervi, and made many contributions to the emerging discipline of photoelastic stress analysis.
