Throughout history models were used by engineers for structures that were beyond their experience, with regard to size, material or type of structure. This was the case with early suspension bridges in the first half of the nineteenth century. The chapter includes a particularly interesting discussion about model tests on an early cable‐stayed bridge by James Dredge.
