The miniaturization process in horology began in the fifteenth century and reached
its zenith in the first half of the sixteenth century, when the earliest known ringwatches with striking mechanism were made. The first watches of this type were
very rare objects of prestige and often presented as diplomatic gifts. Charles V, the
Dukes of Urbino, the Pope, and Suleiman the Magnificent were probably the first
owners of ring-watches. In this article we publish four letters dated 1538 about
Charles V’s ring-watch which shed further light on the history of these objects.
