The author is an authority on the construction of mediaeval masonry vaults and uses models to study the highly‐complex arrangement of stones and bricks in vaults in order to work out how they might have been built and also to assist with quantitative assessment of their structural behaviour which is essential during the refurbishment of such vaults. The author has also turned his methodology to the creation of new forms of masonry structure, using physical models to provide a seamless interaction between the models, their computer‐captured geometric forms, finite‐element structural analysis and methods of construction.
