Heinz Hossdorf set up his own model‐testing laboratory in Basel in Switzerland in 1953 and continued using models in the design of his many highly‐innovative structures from during the following twenty years. In the 1960s he was a leading pioneer in combining the use of physical models with computers using finite‐element software in what he called his ‘hybrid models’. Hossdorf was one of the most profound thinkers about structural engineering in the twentieth century and much of this was, he said, due to the understanding of structural behaviour he derived from using models.
