Herodotus wrote that Egypt was "the gift of the river". It was the main hifhway through the country and an important source of water. Papyrus rafts were probably the first vessels used on her river, but in a short time, the ancient Egyptians were building huge boats used for trade and the transportation of heavy materials -- On land, trade routes to the remote oases and the gold mines were established at an early date by the New Kingdom, around 1570 B.C., the Egyptian armies had left the confines of Egypt to create a vast empire. Chariots used as the main striking force. -- Scenes carved and painted on tombs and temples survive showing small papyrus rafts, merchant boats and the great vessels of the kings and gods. The king is also shown riding in his chariot. However, because of the dry climate and funeral practices, we do not have to rely solely on artist's representations. Full-scale examples of boats and chariots have survived. From these we can see how were made and marvel ar the technical skills required. this book looks at all aspects of transport in ancient Egypt, both on land and water.
